Swaffham Raceway began life in 1975 thanks to Bernie Mayes who built the track from scratch. He set up East Anglian Speed Promotions Ltd and handed over the running to his daughter Colleen. They started out with four formula's; Bangers, Mini Cars, Mini Hot Rods and Motor Cycles.
Back then the track was unrecognisable compared to how it looks today, surrounded by high dirt banks and a ditch, into which many cars landed! Bernie and Colleen ran the track successfully for over 10 years until 1987 when they sold it to it's still current owner Maurice Kirby.
Unfortunately records are a bit sketchy from those early years with regards to points championship winners. Swaffham used to run 2 banger classes, under and over 1500cc, and a few drivers won championships in both classes, including 201 Peter Spinks and 9 Ally 'Banacek' Cox. Other winners in the Unders included 46 Steve Klyn, 3 David Shipp and 160 Richard Raymond whilst in the Overs you hand the likes of 168 Keith Wright, 163 Tony Chambers and 301 Mickey Bates taking the honours. It would appear both the Mini Cars and Mini Hot Rods only ran during '75 and '76 to be replaced by Hot Rods and Stock Cars. In the non-contact class two drivers dominated the ponts championships, 152 Bob Bird and 285 Steve Skitmore. A similar picture was reflected in the stock cars with 132 John Snare and 70 Kevin "Hitman" Cooper all-conquering.
Moving on Maurice rented out the raceway to Trackstar for the start of the 1992 season and they enjoyed many successful years at the helm before being replaced by Spedeworth. They in turn ran it until departing in 2006 which brings us to the current 2008 season when Maurice decided to reopen the raceway himself.
